I feel the need to honour those who came and fought here for us, our country. I lived with them during the battle, we children brought them water. We saw the way they fought, we recognised they were ‘palikaria’ - like Cretans. They fought for us.
Those were the people I wanted to honour but we didn’t have a medal or anything to give them. I organised a memorial at Stavromenos. I invited 50 Australian veterans and Campbell in May 1975 and we had the inauguration.
